Our Mission
The mission of the Town of Delhi Historical Society is to promote history and historical research and to encourage a greater knowledge of the history of Delhi and the surrounding area. Through offering educational exhibits and programs we attempt to bring to life the past, present and future of the Town of Delhi. We have also begun the development of a collection, primarily paper documents and smaller items.
Our Beginnings
The Town of Delhi Historical Society grew out of a chance meeting on Main Street, back in 2007. Clara Stewart (then the Town Historian) and Charlotte Vetter (then chair of the Cannon Library board) were discussing the recent vacancy of the Cannon House. (The Cannon House is part of the Cannon Estate that includes the Cannon Free Library.) The Board was looking for a new use for the space and the town needed a historical society, being one of the few towns in Delaware County without one. The Town Board met, the Library Board met and it was agreed that this was a good idea and the rest, as they say, is history! A provisional charter was issued by the New York State Education Department / The University of the State of New York in Albany on March 18, 2008.
Members research and contribute to our exhibits and programs. We have several permanent exhibits including the history of Delaware Academy, artifacts of our agricultural and industrial past, maps and photographs. We host an annual lecture and program series at the Cannon Library (always scheduled on Tuesday evenings) and open the Cannon House for special exhibits and work days on the second Saturday of each month (March through December).
The Cannon House will be opened for special visits upon request. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.
